Information System Engineering

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Information system engineering (ISE) is the use of any computers, storage, networking, and other physical devices, infrastructure, and processes to create, process, store, secure, and exchange all forms of electronic data. Typically, ISE is used in the context of business operations, as opposed to the technology used for personal or entertainment purposes. The commercial use of ISE encompasses both computer technology and telecommunications. As the ISE industry evolved from the mid-20th century, computing capability increased, while device cost and energy consumption decreased, a cycle that continues today when new technologies emerge.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

A team of administrators and other technical staffers deploy and manage a company’s ISE infrastructure and assets. ISE teams depend on a range of specialized information and technology skills and knowledge to support equipment, applications, and activities. Third-party contractors and ISE vendor support personnel augment the ISE team. The information technology profession is extremely diverse. ISE workers can specialize in fields such as software development; application management; hardware components; server, storage, or network administration; network architecture; and more. Many businesses seek ISE, professionals, with mixed or overlapping skill sets.

CAREER AREAS

The dominance of the ISE job market is due to numerous factors, including the rapid growth of the Internet and e-commerce, lower hardware prices allowing more businesses to upgrade their technology, increased demand for information security specialists spurred by the escalating frequency and sophistication of cybercrimes, the advent of smarter applications enabling companies to analyze data for unprecedented business intelligence, cloud computing revolutionizing the way ISE departments operate, and the continued proliferation of mobile devices. For established information technology professionals or those beginning an ISE career path, this is great news. However, despite rapid growth and increased opportunity, simply showing up will not guarantee success. The ISE job market will continue to get more competitive as people follow the money and jobs. This is why it’s important to clearly identify your career objectives and develop a learning plan with the necessary skills, computer training, and ISE certifications to build a competitive edge and achieve your goals.
